Ending gendered violence

Women's rights are fundamental human rights, yet the reality is that many women still live in fear of threats to their safety every day. The rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, India is a testament to this fact. There appears to be no end to such brutal instances of violence against women. As a result, many parents, especially in our region, place restrictions on their daughters’ free movement, undermining the struggle for women’s rights.
However, we must continue to advocate for both equality and safety. Ending such brutal crimes is not an easy feat, but certainly possible with the combined efforts of the state and society.
