Death holes
The mounting menace of open gutters in Pakistan is a dire issue that requires urgent attention. These exposed gutters have tragically claimed the lives of many children and elderly citizens. The problem is exacerbated during the night and rainy seasons, turning our streets into perilous zones. The heart-wrenching stories of parents still searching for children who have slipped into these death traps highlights the seriousness of the situation. The theft of gutter covers for scrap money is a known problem, stressing both economic desperation and a failure in public infrastructure management. However, addressing these issues demands more than just replacing stolen covers. We need innovative and sustainable solutions to prevent such tragedies.
Strong community engagement programmes should be launched to educate citizens on the dangers of open gutters and the importance of safeguarding public infrastructure. The government must also invest in durable, theft-proof gutter covers, possibly made from less expensive materials or designed to be non-removable. Technology can also play a central role. Installing sensors in gutters to detect blockages or unauthorized tampering could provide real-time alerts to authorities. Also, enhanced street lighting and visible markers around gutters can prevent accidents, particularly at night. Furthermore, strict penalties should be enforced for those caught stealing or damaging public property, coupled with community-based monitoring systems to report such activities.
