Kohat varsity teachers concerned over slash in education budget
PESHAWAR: Kohat University Academic Staff Association (KASA) has expressed concern over the recent decision of the government to slash the budget of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in the country.
“This drastic cut will have far-reaching and devastating consequences for the entire higher education sector in the country, said Dr Farmanullah, president of the association, in a press release issued here on Wednesday.
“As representatives of the academic community, the association is deeply concerned about the impact of this decision on the quality of education, research, and academic freedom in Pakistan’s higher education institutions”, he said. Dr Farmanullah said: “The HEC plays a vital role in promoting academic excellence, fostering innovation, and developing human capital in Pakistan.
The reduction in funding will severely limit the commission’s ability to perform its statutory functions, ultimately affecting the entire education ecosystem”, he argued. The KASA chief said the decision would result in a reduction in funding for research projects and academic programmes, decreased support for faculty development and training and limiting access to scholarships and financial aid for students.
“It will compromise the quality of education and infrastructure in higher educational institutions, brain drain and loss of talented academics to other countries”, he maintained.Dr Farmanullah urged the government to reconsider the decision and prioritize investment in higher education, which is essential for Pakistan’s economic growth, social progress, and global competitiveness.
“We request an immediate review of the budget allocation to ensure that the HEC receives adequate funding to fulfill its mandate,” he added. The KASA chief appealed to all stakeholders, including policymakers, educators, and civil society organizations, to join the association in advocating for the importance of higher education and the need for sustained investment in this critical sector.
