Political parties should unite for making economic pact, says Khuhro
The country is facing economic challenges and inflation, which requires all political parties to come together and sign an economic pact.
Sindh Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) President Nisar Khuhro expressed these views on Sunday as he addressed a party meeting at the Peoples Secretariat in connection with the 45th death anniversary of PPP founder and former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto that fell on April 4, Thursday.
He said the federal government should improve the tax collection process through the Federal Board of Revenue. The meeting was held to discuss a public meeting of the PPP scheduled for April 14 at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh where Bhutto is buried. Sindh PPP General Secretary Waqar Mehdi, Javed Nagori and other party leaders attended the meeting.
Khuhro stated that the main rally to commemorate Bhutto's anniversary would take place at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would address the gathering.
The Sindh PPP president mentioned that the Supreme Court had restored the judiciary's reputation by deciding on the presidential reference regarding Bhutto's execution. He lauded the apex court for "correcting" history in the Bhutto case.
He noted that democracy in the country owed its existence to Bhutto and his family, and the PPP had been playing its role to ensure the continuity of democracy so that the supremacy of the Constitution and Parliament remained intact, and Parliament completed its term.
He said that Asif Ali Zardari, by assuming the presidency again, was utilising his capabilities to pull the country out of the economic crisis. He emphasised that the federal and provincial governments should provide maximum relief to the people against inflation.
Khuhro highlighted that the 18th Amendment had led to the abolition of the concurrent list, transferring federal ministries to provinces. He added that the federation had yet to hand over 17 ministries to the provinces.
He stated that the Sindh government had directed the police and administration to intensify action against bandits and criminals, and the Sindh inspector general of police was personally overseeing the operations.
He said he expected better results soon as far as law and order was concerned. He remarked that the Sindh police had full authority to act against criminals, and they also had support of the Rangers and other law enforcement agencies. He added that the leadership of the PPP and Sindh government wanted to establish complete peace and security in the province and police efforts towards the complete eradication of criminal elements should continue.
