Bournemouth heap more misery on Burnley with 2-0 away win
Bournemouth took the lead after 13 minutes through Kluivert who latched onto a long ball over the top
BURNLEY: Bournemouth extended relegation-battling Burnley’s Premier League winless run to nine matches with a 2-0 victory at Turf Moor on Sunday after goals from Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo gave Andoni Iraola’s side their first win in 2024.
Bournemouth took the lead after 13 minutes through Kluivert who latched onto a long ball over the top and outsmarted Dara O’Shea with a quick turn before firing past James Trafford.
Burnley dominated possession, with 80% of the ball at one stage, but they lacked accuracy with the final pass into the box while Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto made a superb save from a Jacob Bruun Larsen free-kick just before halftime.
Semenyo sealed the points late on after a solo run when the Ghanaian cut in from the left and saw his shot deflected into the net as Bournemouth moved to 31 points and sit 13th. The win moved third-placed Arsenal level on 34 points with Chelsea, who visit Leicester City later on Sunday, and three points behind Manchester City, who beat Everton 2-1 on Saturday.
Arsenal had the upper hand in the early going on a pitch the WSL said was the first prepared for a league game by an all-female ground staff but it was Jessica Naz of Spurs who came closest by hitting the bar midway through the first half.
The Gunners reshuffled and made the breakthrough early in the second half as Beth Mead made the most of a switch in play, squaring the ball as she was tackled for her England team mate Russo to blast home form close range.
Tottenham made a triple substitution just after the hour mark and later brought on striker Beth England but despite a tetchy finish, with five yellow cards in the final 11 minutes, Arsenal held out for a vital win in their title challenge.
