Clean water
This refers to the letter ‘Unsafe to Drink’ (January 22, 2024). The burden of waterborne diseases has not only strained our health infrastructure but has also contributed significantly to stunted growth among children. The interconnected issues of environmental and public health underscore the urgent need for collaborative efforts to secure clean and safe water for our population. Beneath the Indus Basin lies a vast reservoir of pristine underground water – an indispensable resource that can meet the drinking water needs of our rapidly growing population.
However, this invaluable source is under threat due to irresponsible pesticide use in agriculture, unregulated pumping leading to the intrusion of brackish water, and the release of wastewater and industrial waste into water bodies. It is imperative to establish a robust mechanism for monitoring the quality of underground water, discharge rates, and pumping activities. By safeguarding the pristine underground water, we not only address the immediate water needs of the population but also fortify the foundation for a healthier and more sustainable future for Pakistan.
