ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday imposed Rs1 lakh fine on a citizen who failed to give Haq Mehar to his wife and directed him to ensure payment of Rs5 lakh to his wife within a month.
A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, while hearing the matter, directed proceedings against the spouse if he fails to give his wife Rs5 lakh Haq Mehar.
Addressing the counsel for the petitioner, the CJP asked him if he did not adhere to Pakistan’s law. At least, he should respect the Islamic principles that stress Haq Mehar, which is the right of a wife. The counsel submitted that his client had two wives.
The court directed the petitioner to ensure within 30 days the payment of Rs5 lakh as Haq Mehar after informing the family court concerned and submission of documents and dismissed his application.
