Karachi to host top Egyptian players in squash carnival
KARACHI: Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) will host top Egyptian players next month in a bid to show the world that Pakistan is a safe country and home to sports-loving, hospitable people.
The PSF senior vice-president, Razi Nawab, along with legendary former player Jahangir Khan, addressed a press conference at the PAF Museum’s convention centre here on Thursday and disclosed that the federation is going to hold a three-week squash carnival in Karachi from April 1.
“During the carnival, a Legends versus Champions Squash Series featuring matches between players from Pakistan and Egypt in four wall glass court would be held from April 5-7,” said Razi.
He said that between April 1-4, local players will get a chance to play at the portable court. After the series, a $15,000 event would also be played on the same court.
“The PSA does not allow to hold high prize squash events with foreign participation in Islamabad. So, we are organising this promotional event in Karachi — the biggest city of the country,” he said, adding that the event will be a step forward to the revival of squash in Pakistan.
Jahangir, one of the greatest the game has ever seen, termed the planned event a positive step.
“It is a real pleasure to be part of this event. The PSF has the vision and will to make a difference. We still have loads of talent in the country and it is just about giving the youngsters an opportunity,” Jahangir said.
The Egyptian squad includes World No4 Omar Mossad, World No6 six Tariq Momen, World No7 Karim Abdul Gawad, World No17 Mazen Hasham and World No14 Ali Farag.
Jahanzeb Khan of JZ Squash World, who is bringing these Egyptian players to Pakistan, said that it has been over 23 years since any international team event was held in Karachi.
“Now is the time to organise such events and bring action back to the city,” he told ‘The News’ in an email.
“We want to show the world that Pakistan is capable of hosting events without any problem,” he added.
