Once again Imran Khan is calling for the accountability of the government and has announced a shutdown of the country’s capital. Similar to the dharna politics of 2014, the democratic legitimacy of his action plan is questionable. The lockdown of the capital will adversely affect the life of the residents of the city and create uncertainty among local and foreign investors. This will weaken the country’s already fragile economy.
In the context of the ongoing internal and external tensions, there are concerns over whether Khan’s action will change the system of the government. Pakistan needs strong democratic institutions and Khan should consider what his actions are encouraging.
