LAHORE

The Lahore High Court Thursday sought assistance from the federal government on maintainability of a petition seeking directions to the federal government to take back Kohinoor diamond back from Queen Elizabeth-II of Britain.

As the proceedings commenced on Thursday, Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood observed that the court had to decide whether it got jurisdiction to issue directions to Queen Elizabeth-II for return of diamond and sought assistance from federal government counsel for February 25. Barrister Syed Javed Iqbal Jaffree filed the petition submitting that Kohinoor was once the largest cut diamond in the world and 105-carat stone was presented to Queen Victoria during the British Raj.

He alleged that British rulers during occupation of Sub-Continent had seized Kohinoor weighing 105 carats and worth billions of rupees, from Daleep Singh, grandson of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh and took to United Kingdom.

notice: The Lahore High Court Thursday again issued a contempt notice to federal defence secretary on a petition of a retired Subedar for not implementing the court order for deciding his pending application for release of post-retirement benefits equal to commissioned officers of the army.
