Pakistan remain third with 37 medals

KARACHI: Pakistan won one gold, one silver and six bronze medals on the fifth day of 12th South Asian Games in India on Tuesday.

Thus, Pakistan have so far won 37 medals: five gold, 12 silver, and 20 bronze.

India lead the table with 119 medals, including 74 gold. Sri Lanka are on the second position with 84 medals, including 17 gold.

Nooh Dastgir Butt won gold in weightlifting 105 kg category with a total lift of 360 kg (160 + 200).

Nooh has previously won Asian Youth Championships 2015 in Doha and Commonwealth Championships 2105 in Pune.

In men’s volleyball event, Pakistan clinched bronze by defeating Maldives by 25-17, 25-19, 25-13.

In Wushu, Waleed Ajmal won bronze medal.

Pakistan’s men’s squash team defeated Bangladesh 3-0 on Tuesday. Farhan Zaman beat Md Shumon 11-3, 11-7, 11-7 in the first singles. Danish Atlas Khan won against Shahid Islam 11-2, 11-2, 11-4 in the second. Saqib Yousuf won against Rajon Kumar 11-1, 11-1, 11-3 in the third.

Pakistan’s women’s team won 3-0 against Nepal. Sadia Gul defeated Bhawana Sunwar 11-1, 11-5, 11-3 in the first singles. Sammer Anjum beat Krishna Thapa 11-2, 11-1, 11-2 in the second. Moqaddas Ashraf won against Bipana Blon 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 in the third.

On Monday, Pakistan had defeated Nepal 3-0 in the first match. In the first singles, Farhan defeated Thapa Magar of Nepal 11-1, 11-3, 11-7 and Danish beat Hira Bahadur Thapa 11-5, 11-5, 11-6 in the second. Saqib won against Sujan Jwarchan 11-0, 11-3, 11-3 in the third.

Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 the same day. Nasir Iqbal defeated Ravindu H Laksiri 11-6, 11-6, 11-7 in the first singles. Danish won against Md Shamil Wakeel 11-3, 11-4, 11-3 in the second. Saqib defeated Gihan Suwaris 14-12, 11-5, 11-4 in the third.

Pakistan’s women team also won its first match against Sri Lanka on Monday. Maria Toor Pakai defeated Mihilya Methsarani     11-5, 11-8, 11-5 in the first singles and Sadia overpowered Naduni Gunawardane 11-9, 15-13, 7-11, 11-5 in the second singles. Sammer won against Fathima Issadeen 11-9, 11-1, 11-4 in the third singles.

Pakistan will clash with India in both men and women finals on Wednesday (today).

Pakistan’s shooting athletes start their campaign on Wednesday. Pakistan has 11 male and eight female shooters.

“We are hoping to win gold medal in center fire, rapid fire pistol events in the mega event,” Razi Ahmed Khan of National Rifle Association of Pakistan (NRAP) said before leaving for India.
