LCWU celebrates its 94th anniversary
LAHORE
All set to celebrate 94th anniversary of establishment of Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) on Thursday (today).
According to a press release issued here on Wednesday, LCWU, with enrollment of more than 10 thousand students, is a prestigious women university which was established as a college on May 5, 1922. Vice Chancellor Dr Uzma Qureshi has arranged an event in collaboration with Lahore College Associates (LCA) in the campus where Higher Education Minister Zakia Shahnawaz will be the chief guest.
Established in May 1922 as an intermediate residential college, LCWU was originally housed in a building on Hall Road, Lahore, with a total of 60 students and 13 staff members. By 1950, the college strength had increased to 600 students and the college was shifted to the present building on Jail Road.
From May 1922 till today, Lahore College for Women University has witnessed tremendous growth and development in various educational programs.
LCWU by 1922 was affiliated with the University of the Punjab with undergraduate programs in 18 disciplines. Within the next two years the institution had introduced graduate programs in 14 subjects. LCWU has enjoyed the status of being one of the pioneer girls’ degree colleges of Pakistan since 1940. Postgraduate classes in English were initiated in 1940 and honors classes in five subjects were introduced in 1949. BSc classes started in 1955 while postgraduate classes in the subjects of Economics and Physics started in 1966. By 1979 Islamic Studies, Political Science and Psychology were also added to the ever increasing list of disciplines taught at the university.
The university became an autonomous body in 1990 and as its growth progressed it was also elevated to the status of a university on 10th September 2002 which placed it in the running for becoming one of the leading universities of Pakistan. Lahore College for Women University is committed to promoting contemporary and critical thought in some of the major challenging disciplines in the world including Information Technology, Mass Communication, Environmental Sciences and Pharmacy which have been strengthened and developed with the generous help of HEC. Before only two departments namely Physics and Botany were offering Masters in their respective fields. During 1990 to 2002 in the supervision of Professor Dr Bushra Mateen fourteen subjects in four year degree programme were also introduced.
In the Year 2010, another important milestone was achieved as once again Punjab government honoured this university by affiliating Govt Islamia College for Women, Cooper Road, Govt College for Women, Samanabad Lahore and Govt Degree College for Women, Gulberg Lahore with LCWU.
In a message on founders day Vice Chancellor Dr Uzma Qureshi has said that her team is confident of coping with challenges in higher education sector in 21st Century, especially academic excellence, financial sustainability and empowering of women graduates through unified strategic planning, stimulating academic programs, research and innovation, and a set of beliefs that stress integrity and tolerance necessary to make the world a better place to live in.
