The Rangers’ powers
This refers to the news report, ‘Rangers demand own police stations in Karachi’ (March 8). The Rangers first wanted the provincial government to increase the period for remand from 30 to 90 days, then military courts and now they want police stations of their own. Tomorrow they will ask for manning the home and law departments as well.
Policing the state requires a different type of education, training and organisational setup that are not available to the Rangers. No provincial government can function efficiently if there is a more powerful agency over it because lack of unity of control leads to divergent actions. For lasting peace, it is necessary to improve the working of the police department and attend to the basic needs of the people.
