Post Graduate Medical Institute/Lahore General Hospital (PGMI/LGH) Principal Prof Khalid Mahmood has said that medical research in Pakistan can touch new heights provided the government patronises it consistently.
The modern treatment center for Parkinson and other neuro complications which has introduced BDS therapy for the first time in Pakistan at Lahore General Hospital can match any such international institution by all standards. LGH Parkinson Centre carried out 16 BDS operations win less than a year while not more than 25 BDS cases are taken in any international Parkinson treatment center,” he said while addressing the concluding session of the first medical conference in Pakistan on “Parkinson and Movement disorder”, according to a press release issued here on Sunday. The 2-day conference was attended by a large number of foreign and national delegates including renowned neuro surgeons and neurologists. The pioneer of DBS treatment in Pakistan, Prof. Khalid Mahmood, elaborated various technical and professional points about 16 cases of Parkinson cases which he handled at LGH Parkinson Center with the help of CDs. He said that new horizons of research have been discovered with the start of DBS therapy. Young doctors should do more and more research on the method. He said that Parkinson patients had to bear about Rs 10 million for their treatment abroad while in Pakistan it was possible only at Rs 2 million. He expressed the hope the Parkinson center at LGH would go a long way to inspire and help young doctors to be experts in the medial field. Prof. Khalid Mahmood also appreciated CM Shahbaz Sharif for his relentless efforts to enhance and upgrade the health sector in the province through generously spending.
