Forty volunteer students from different schools of Karachi and Global Seafood Marketing staff celebrated World Oceans Day with the theme of “Let-The-Fish-Grow” at Sea View.
The purpose of the event was to create public awareness, particularly among the youth, about the existing state of oceans which point to an alarming situation as there has been clear evidence of diminishing catches and the extinction of several valued fish species over the years.
Organised on June 8, “Let-the-Fish- Grow” was focused on the protection of oceans and importance of highlighting juvenile fishing by restricting the unauthorised use of fine-mesh fishing nets in order to ensure the existence of marine life.
Mir Nasir Abbas, chairman of the South Asian Resources Group and former director general of the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, graced the occasion with his presence.
In his address to the students, he said: “Pakistan’s seafood industry has a great potential; however due to polluted oceans of the country, the demand for Pakistani seafood is on constant decline. In such a situation, it is important for the youth to realise their responsibility towards sea animals which can ultimately lead to a better economy”.
Following the awareness session by the management representative of Global Seafood Marketing, Vivian Victor, a beach-cleaning activity was carried out by the participants of the campaign, led by Sadaf Malik.
It was a great sight to see the young students actively participating in the activity. Towards the conclusion of their campaign, the entire team of “Let-the-fish-Grow” drive invited everyone to take ocean conservation personally by making a commitment to do something to help protect the oceans.
