This refers to the article, ‘Pakistan’s attention span problem’ (August 25) by Ayaz Amir. The writer seems confused by suggesting, “What Pakistan needs is something totally different: a directly elected president – a president elected by all the people – with executive power in his hands.” The question is: who will get this done? Our political leadership? Certainly not because their interests lie in continuing with the present system and maintaining the status quo. In fact, they undone the 18th Amendment along with Article 58(2)b, leaving no forum for the removal of a government even in times of bad governance and extreme maladministration.
Moreover, the writer opines, “An extension will be the kiss of death to Gen Raheel Sharif.” Agreed. But what is the alternative? Who will clean up the politicians, bureaucrats and business tycoons involved in mega corruption, money laundering, tax evasion, smuggling, land grabbing, etc?
