This refers to the news story, ‘First photovoltaic solar plant starts power output’ (April 16). The nation should be congratulated for constructing a 100MW solar project at Bahawalpur under the able guidance of Najam Ahmed Shah – a Cranfield University alumnus. Credit also goes to the Punjab CM for having conceived such a wonderful project and providing all possible help in its execution.
The project would generate electricity by utilising sunshine – which is available in abundance in the country. Now, nine other projects of similar capacity (100MW each) would follow to complete 1,000MW of the whole park. In this solar park, millions of ready-made solar panels and billions of solar cells will be imported. We should also manufacture solar panels and solar cells indigenously. If we had taken this decision since the project was started we would have reached somewhere by now. This initiative could be taken now. The Punjab CM is requested to set up facilities for generating electricity through wind as well.
