The memorandum of understanding to teach Chinese in schools in Sindh from grade VI as a compulsory subject is a good step. Other provinces should also sign similar MoUs and provide opportunities to students to learn Chinese which is counted among the most popular languages of the world.
It is interesting that besides learning Sindhi, Urdu and English students in Sindh will also learn Chinese. However, it is regrettable that we are unable to speak our own local languages. It is disappointing and alarming that children are not studying their native languages. The federal government should induct local languages in the school syllabus of every province or offer short courses. That will also help save the vernacular languages of the country.
