How to stop abuse

June 25, 2021

It is an unfortunate truth that child sexual abuse is endemic in seminaries. The authorities may consider the following points that can help them deal with this problem. They should identify the exact number, name and location of seminaries in each district, town and village of Pakistan. All teachers should be asked to submit the copies of their CNICs. Students will have to undergo medical and psychological tests on a regular basis. In case the authorities find out that a child has been abused, strict legal action should be taken against the culprit. The government should issue a standard syllabus that must be taught at all seminaries. Those who do not comply should be closed.

A child protection policy should be issued and sent to all madrassahs (and schools). This policy should be read out loud in front of children so that they know how to ask for help. There should be a three-digit helpline number for students in need of help.
