LAHORE
Taking advantage of mastery in street politics and electioneering tactics, Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) candidates prevailed in different union councils of Data Ganj Bakhsh Town.
During a visit to different UCs it was observed that PML-N candidates and their supporters had adopted a comprehensive strategy for the polling day. They were seen taking out candidates from their homes for voting and dropping them back. For this transport facility, including cars and rickshaws and even motorbikes, was made available from early morning till the polling time ended despite the fact distance to polling stations was not too far in most of the UCs.
As if the PML-N candidates were financially stronger than others, a difference in terms of setting up election camps and displaying flags, banners and hoardings was visible when compared to candidates of other parties. This was followed by arrangements by the PML-N candidates to serve meal to their supporters at their camps.
The election festivity was high on streets and roads in Sant Nagar, Krishan Nagar, Out Fall Road, Sanda Road, Abdali Chowk and many other areas with party workers and supports of different political parties and independent candidates chanting slogans in favour of their respective candidates. Minor scuffles were also reported from different areas especially among PML-N and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters and workers. The police deployed at polling stations remained alert the day long in order to avoid any untoward incident.
In Data Gunj Bakhsh Town the election was particularly interesting in UC-58 where all major parties had fielded their socially well connected candidates. These parties included PML-N, PTI, JI and Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP). In the adjoining UC-57 the election was interesting as well because of the strong candidates of PTI and PML-N.
Similarly, the situation was noticed interesting in UC-59 where disgruntled PML-N workers (candidate for Chairman and Vice Chairman) contested the elections independently after the party refused tickets to them. The two had good social connections and thus put pressure on the PML-N candidates.
A tough competition was also witnessed in UC-65 between PTI and PML-N in Islampura. As soon as the polling time finished the workers and supporters of PTI and PML-N gathered outside the polling stations of their respective UCs and started chanting slogans in favour of their candidates.
