A man holding degrees from Karachi’s two prestigious educational institutions, the NED University and the Institute of Business Administration, has been arrested for his affiliation with terrorist outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT), police said on Tuesday.
Besides, the al Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) Karachi chief has also been rounded up in a separate raid.
Counter-terrorism department’s investigation wing chief Mazhar Mashwani said Mohammad Owais Raheel, who had studied engineering at the NED University and then finished his MBA at the IBA, was arrested in a raid conducted at his flat near Nihari Inn at Boat Basin.
A large quantity of hate-inciting pamphlets was found at his home.
During interrogation, Raheel said he had joined the HuT after finishing his education.
The HuT does not recognise the system of governance and the Constitution of Pakistan and wants to introduce its own version of khilafat in the country.
Raheel was assigned the task of motivating people, especially youngsters at educational institutions, in Defence and Clifton to join his organisation and also distributing pamphlets outside mosques in the area for this purpose.
He was inspired by the sermons of Dr Israr Ahmed of the Tanzeem-e-Islami and followed his teachings.
Raheel and other members of his organisation contacted each other using Viber and other voice over internet protocol applications as well as social networking websites and had their set-ups in Landhi, Malir and Model Colony.
