DIR: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the election for Wari Tehsil Nazim and Naib Nazim after the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) got a stay order from the court. Previously, the election for the position of nazim and naib nazim in Wari tehsil had twice ended in a tie. The re-election was slated for September 20, but the JI got a stay order from the court a day earlier. Senior Civil Judge Dir granted the stay order.
The leaders and elected members of the Muttahida Qaumi Mahaz, including Najmuddin Khan, Gul Bahadur, Saeed Shah and others, protested against the stay order. District Election Commissioner Amjad Ali told the protesters that he had approached the ECP whether the court of senior civil judge was authorised to grant the stay order. The elected members of the Muttahida Qaumi Mahaz had reached the office of the returning officer for the election, but the JI members didn’t show up.
Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Mahaz leaders and elected members including newly elected PPP MPA from PK-93 constituency, Sahibzada Sanaullah, tehsil nazim candidate Gul Bahadur and tehsil naib nazim candidate Saeed Shah told a press conference in Wari that the JI was running away from the election. They alleged that provincial Minister for Local Government Inayatullah was also backing the JI.
Sahibzada Sanaullah said the senior civil judge had violated the law as he was not authorised to grant the stay order in the case. They asked the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court to order an inquiry into the matter. The Muttahida Qaumi Mahaz was formed by the PPP, ANP, JUI-F and other parties to block the JI from winning the Wari Tehsil nazim and naib nazim positions.
