This refers to the article, ‘Pakistan’s attention span problem’ (August 25) by Ayaz Amir. The article revolves around nine major points: criticism of the PM’s resolve to continue with mega projects, self-conceived conspiracy theories, ISI fever, Imran’s next move, concentration of power, kitchen cabinet, civilian-military relations, Ufa goof-up and business interests of our ruling elite.
Of these, six points – conspiracy theories, civilian-military relations, ISI fever, Imran’s politics, Ufa goof-up and business interests – are the creation of vested interests trying to establish Nawaz’s failure in handling our internal and external affairs. The statement issued by Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif at Ufa covered all outstanding issues – including the core issue of Kashmir. It is true that the army is calling the shots but we should not forget that this status is temporary and the government voluntarily encouraged Gen Raheel Sharif to take the centre stage. One agrees with the writer that giving an extension to Gen Raheel would do no good to the country but to suggest that we should have a presidential form of governance is going too far. No system is bad. It is the people who run a system that make the difference.
