Dr. Abdul Wali Khan, who is working as assistant executive director at the Federal Government Polyclinic, has completed his PhD in Public Health on HEC scholarship from Medical University of Vienna, Austria, says a press release.
During his studies, he conducted research on occupational hazards, exposure to cotton dusts and endotoxin, spirometry and industrial hygiene safety measures in the cotton industry of Punjab.
For the first time, cotton dusts, particulate matter, nano-particles (ultra-fine particles), pesticides and endotoxin were measured in the cotton industry of Pakistan and their deleterious effects on cotton workers were determined. From these findings an original research paper was published in Britain Medical Journal (BMJ) Open. Additionally, cellular effects and hazards effects on respiratory system were determined.
Cytotoxic and genotoxic cellular effects applying Buccal Micronucleus Cytome Assay (BMCyT) were worldwide evaluated in cotton weavers and these findings were published in 'Mutagenesis, an Oxford Journal'. Adverse health effects particularly on lungs due to exposure to cotton dusts, endotoxin and other toxic environmental pollutants were assessed using standard spirometry with additional subjective reported symptoms and results were published in high impact factor peer reviewed 'Occupational & Environmental Medicine Journal.'
