In the recent Turkish elections, the party led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan lost its majority in parliament. That dented the Turkish president’s moves to acquire more powers.
Most rulers in Muslim democracies seem to share this sort of thinking. Why has it become near possible in the Muslim world to strengthen institutions? Why can Muslim rulers not get rid of the mindset centred on self-aggrandisement? Why is there no emphasis on more democracy? In case of Tayyip Erdogan, he has been in power for the past 15 years. Why is he not open to the idea of allowing others to serve the country and letting more talented leadership to emerge? Why is the Muslim world bereft of statesmen? Can somebody answer these questions?
