PESHAWAR: The lack of quorum once again disrupted the proceedings of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Tuesday and the session was adjourned for two days.
The assembly session chaired by Speaker Asad Qaiser had resumed its proceedings after a break of six days. After recitation from the Holy Quran, only four lawmakers were present in the 124-member assembly.
They were Gohar Nawaz Khan of Qaumi Watan Party (QWP), Arbab Akbar Hayat of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Qurban Ali and Arif Khan Ahmadzai of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).
On a point of order, Gohar Nawaz Khan pointed out the lack of quorum in the House. At this the speaker directed the ringing of the bells for two minutes to get the legislators to come to the assembly.
But after the session resumed, the House was not found in order and the speaker had to adjourn the proceedings till Friday. The speaker directed all the members to ensure attendance in the House. He said he couldn’t continue the proceeding unless the quorum was complete.
It was the second time in the same month that the provincial assembly could not resume its proceedings due to lack of quorum. On May 12, the speaker had to adjourn the assembly session till May 19 due to lack of quorum.
However, on Tuesday the House again failed to hold proceedings because of lack of quorum and was adjourned till Friday. The current session is the longest in the history of any legislature as it started on October 23, 2014 and is still continuing.
