A colorful girls sports gala held at Pir Mehr Ali Shah-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi (PMAS-AAUR) here on Wednesday with an aim to provide female students an opportunity to explore their talent in a practical way.
On the occasion, PMAS-AAUR Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Rai Niaz Ahmad inaugurated the sports gala while Special Judge Central Muhammad Naeem Arshad and Senator Najma Hameed were the guests of honour. The event was also attended by deans, directors, faculty members, staff and a large number of female students.
More than 100 students of different departments showed their sports spirit and enthusiasm by participating in different sports activities, including 100 metre race, 400 metre rally race, discus throw, volleyball, long jump, handkerchief snatching, short put, tug of war etc.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Rai Niaz Ahmad, emphasised the students that knowledge without practice is nothing, adding that sports related activities help the students to polish their hidden potential. He said that women are the half of country’s population and through healthy sports activities we can prepare them for the tough future challenges. A woman can play a pivotal role in the uplift of the society, the VC added. He said Pakistan’s future depends upon education and the ability of students can be utilised through such activities for the benefit of the country. PMAS-AAUR has been trying to provide better opportunities for extracurricular events to the youth so that they could play their role in nation building, he said. At the end, the chief guest distributed prizes and shields among the students who got top positions in different competitions.
Earlier, Syeda Irum Umer, coordinator of the event delivered the welcome address and said that such extracurricular activities are essential for the personality development of students. She said sports are an integral part of education and the objective behind holding the sports gala is to involve the students in healthy activities.
