A man was gunned down at his shop by robbers in Shah Latif Town on Monday, police said. Abdul Rehman, 25, was working when armed robbers barged into his shop and started looting. At this, a security guard present there opened fire. The robbers shot back, injuring Rehman, and fled.

The injured shop owner was moved to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead. The deceased had suffered a bullet wound to his upper torso. A case has been lodged and an investigation is under way.

Despite a largely successful Rangers-led targeted operation under way in Karachi, incidents of muggings and other robberies are on the rise in Karachi. On Saturday, an Easyload shop owner was shot and injured when he put up resistance to robbers in North Nazimabad’s Block K on Saturday.

One of the two robbers opened fire on 24-year-old Khurram, son of Javed, when he resisted their bid to snatch cash from him near the Masjid Farooq-e-Azam, said Head Moharir Khush Nawaz of the Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station.

In another incident that took place near Darul Sehat Hospital in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on February 1, two muggers intercepted 26-year-old Javed and tried to steal his cellphone. However, when he resisted, they opened fire on him and escaped.

The man was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead. He was an auto electrician and lived with his brother in a seminary in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block-14. The victim’s brother told police that Javed was coming to meet him at the seminary for lunch.

On January 30, a seven-year-old was killed and her sister injured when robbers opened indiscriminate firing after a crowd of people tried to nab them during a mugging attempt in Korangi No 5.

Korangi SHO Inayatullah Marwat said two men on a motorcycle mugged a man identified Sohail near Khaddi Bus Stop, but when they tried to ride away, people present at the crime scene attempted to catch them. To avoid being caught, the robbers opened fire on the public, injuring two schoolgirls, he added. The injured girls identified as Muhammadul Fatima and her older sister Sajeeha.
