ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Thursday recommended elevation of Chief Justice Lahore High Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Meeting of JCP for appointment of judges in the superior courts was held here in the Supreme Court building, presided over by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar being the Chairman of the Commission. During the meeting the Commission recommended elevation of Chief Justice Lahore High Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah to Supreme Court of Pakistan. Similarly, the Commission also recommended Justice Yawar Ali Khan as the new Chief Justice of Lahore High Court. It is pertinent to mention here that Justice Yawar Ali was one of the members of the Special Court hearing the high treason case against former military dictator General ® Pervez Musharraf for imposing emergency rule in the country in 2007. The Judicial Commission also recommended six names for the appointment of Sindh High Court (SHC) additional judges.
Similarly, the Commission recommended two District and Sessions Court judges Ishrat Ali Shah and Kausar Sultana Hussain, besides recommending names of four lawyers including Adnan Iqbal Chaudhry, Amjid Ali Sahito, Agha Faisal and Shamsuddin Abbasi for appointment as additional judges for a year.
At present, out of the total strength of 40 judges, 33 judges are working in the SHC. The JCP was constituted under the 18th Constitutional Amendment.
The recommendations made by the Commission on Thursday now will be sent to Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment for consideration.
