PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakh-tunkhwa’s Director General Sports Junaid Khan on Friday announced a cash award of Rs50,000 for young tennis player Hamza Roman, winner of various Under-10 titles.
Hamza has won titles in the National McDonalds Junior Tennis Championship, Federal Cup, Nayaz Pakistan Open and the 2nd Chairman POA Wah Championships. He also played the finals of Under-12 and Under-14 singles categories this year.
The recent National Under-10 Tennis Championship title was his fifth. In 2016, Hamza won eight tournaments and in 2015 he had seven different titles to his name at the age of just seven. He is the youngest ever player to have won the championship at the age of seven and eight and his national ranking is No 1 in the Under-10 category.
Talking to ‘The News’ after returning from the National Ranking Tournament in Lahore, Hamza said he wanted to win the Under-12 and Under-14 category titles as well. He said Roger Federer and Pakistan’s Davis Cup player Hameedul Haq are his ideals and wanted to become players like them.
“I am working hard to polish my skills and win many titles for the country,” he said.He praised his father Roman Gul, a tennis coach, for helping him in improving his skills. Roman Gul said his son has love and passion for tennis.
