Checks and balances
The Punjab government has set up as many as 318 Ramazan bazaars throughout the province to ensure people can buy quality food items at reasonably reduced prices. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also made a commendable announcement about a Ramazan package. At least Rs 9 billion have been allocated for the initiative and relief is being provided through the subsidised prices of flour bags, pulses, apples, bananas, ghee, cooking oil and other essential items. The relevant authorities have also been directed to ensure the price lists of all food items are prominently displayed at all Ramazan bazaars to ensure that consumer do not fall prey to profiteering.
Although the relief that is being provided appears to be insufficient, something is better than nothing. Purchasing food items at subsidised rates is far better than spending more on poor quality food items that are costlier. However, the chief minister should also ensure that the poorer sections of society benefit from the Ramazan package. Steps should also be taken to ensure shopkeepers do not purchase subsidised wheat in bulk from Ramazan bazaars and sell them at higher prices at their shops. People should also refrain from purchasing items beyond their immediate daily needs.
