Islamabad
Need to promote reporting on science and technology was stressed at a two-day workshop titled ‘Understanding Science’ organised jointly by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) and National Press Club.
The two-day media workshop ‘Understanding Science’ started on Thursday at Pakistan Museum of Natural History. Over 40 journalists from electronic and print media are participating in the workshop which is aimed at enhancing the capacity of journalists in reporting on issues related to science and technology.
Comstech Coordinator General Dr. Shaukat Hameed was the chief guest at inaugural ceremony of the workshop. Pakistan Science Foundation Chairman Professor Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, National Press Club President Shakeel Anjum, heads of science and technology organisations, office-bearers of NPC and a large number of journalists were present on this occasion.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Shaukat Hameed said that good education is imperative to understand and promote science.
He said that for reporting on science activities, the journalists must have some basic information about the working of the scientists and science and technology organisation. He said that due to lack of media’s interest in science most of the developments in this field are not being properly projected.
PSF Chairman Professor Dr. Muhammad Ashraf in his address highlighted PSF’s initiatives for scientists and journalists for popularising science in the country. He called upon journalists to play their role in highlighting science activities in the country for education of not only students but also on general public.
Shakeel Anjum said that NPC has signed a MoU with the PSF and plans to organise more such activities for the benefit of media persons so that they can contribute in the promotion of science and technology. PSF member Science Professor Dr. Akram Sheikh others also spoke on this occasion.
