Man kills brother-in-law, injures sister over ‘free-will marriage’
Honour killing remains a social evil in Pakistan as a man allegedly killed his brother-in-law and injured his sister on Saturday over what appears to be a matter of their free-will marriage.
Hailing from Punjab, the couple – Muhammad Azam, 25, and Sumera – were lying wounded in their home in Mulla Essa Goth, Gulshan-e-Maymar, when the police reached spot.
Gulshan-e-Maymar police said residents of the slum area informed the police that relatives of the couple, who belonged to Nankana Sahib, rushed out of their home and immediately ran away from the area.
Rescue teams were called in to shift the injured to hospital where Azam was pronounced dead on arrival.
Gulshan-e-Maymar police head mohrir Mashoq Ali said the couple had run away from their hometown after marrying a few months back.
He said Azam’s brother-in-law, whose name is yet to be known, traced them in Karachi and reached their house three days ago.
According to Azam’s neighbours, the alleged murderer told the couple that he had come to invite them to a wedding ceremony in Nankana Sahib.
“But he attacked his brother-in-law and sister on the third day of his stay,” the police official added.
