It is a common practice for vendors to keep hens in wooden enclosures in their shops and slaughter them according to consumers’ demand. These hens are stuffed in small spaces and are not fed properly. In fact – and this has been a personal observation – no fresh water is provided to these animals. It is heartrending to see that animals are kept in such a deplorable condition before they can be sacrificed for humans’ consumption. Keeping animals in such a ramshackle condition is not even cruel to those animals, but such deplorable conditions can make those animals ill. Subsequently, the meat coming from these ill animals may harm humans.
Similarly, the conditions of vegetable and fruit markets are no better. Vegetables and fruits are often found lying on roads, covered in dust. This is the condition of those food items which we eat daily. Food items should be kept in a clean environment. The authorities concerned with the proper distribution of food are requested to look into this matter. Similarly, vendors are requested to properly sensitise their shops and ensure cleanliness.
