Health and safety law for domestic workers, labourers in the offing

SUKKUR: Adviser to the Chief Minister on Labour and Human Resources, Senator Saeed Ghani, here on Tuesday told a national conference organized by the Wapda Hydro Electric Workers Union that the provincial government was drafting a health safety law for domestic workers and labourers, which would be presented before the Sindh Assembly for debate soon.

Senator Ghani said that there was a communication gap between the workers and the capitalists.  The adviser said that he would like to ask them to bridge the gap, and that the Sindh government was willing to play its role in this regard. 

He said that the government was determined to address the problems of the labourers.  Senator Ghani said that the labour policy would be introduced within days with the consensus of the representatives of the labour unions, the employers and the government.

He urged the workers to ensure punctuality in their offices and to abide by the code of conduct. The adviser said that the image of the trade unions had been distorted by some actors under a conspiracy.

Senator Ghani also visited the Workers Model School and Hospital, where he regretted over the condition of both the institutions.  He ordered the administration to rectify the situation.

The adviser, while taking notice of shortage of furniture and books at the school, asked the secretary of labour to address the issue within days. Senator Ghani also visited the Labour Colony, where the director of labour told him that 1,024 flats were available for 3,000 registered workers while 1,700 industrial units were working there.
