Workers’ safety
Cranes and scaffolds are two basic tools in any construction activity and both are most vulnerable to collapse if ever not constantly watched, inspected and supervised during operation. As per various investigation reports in the case of crane accidents – such as the one in Saudi Arabia – one finds almost similar violations.
All stakeholders have to strike a balance between targeted completion schedule and a safe construction site. Construction safety comes at the cost of increased expense and extended schedule. Nothing will change unless the mindset of the involved parties, client and contractor, accepts workers’ safety as their prime responsibility. Sadly, in Pakistan as well, human life is of no value, especially if it’s of a poor soul. That is very evident from the frequent collapse of private and government-run coal mines in Baluchistan. Has anyone ever heard the government taking any action against those responsible for the inspection, supervision and safety of coal mines?
