Olympic gold medallist Laura Dahlmeier dies in Pakistan mountains
ISLAMABAD: German Olympic gold medalist, world and national champion in biathlon, Laura Dahlmeier, has breathed her last in the mountains of Pakistan at the age of 31.
Laura was struck by falling rocks on Monday while climbing Laila Peak (6,094m) in the Hushe Valley of Baltistan, at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters. Despite tireless efforts by the local rescue teams, persistent adverse weather severely hampered rescue operations.
Maj General Irfan Arshad, President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, extended heartfelt condolences to Laura’s family, friends, and the international mountaineering community during this time of profound grief.
Laura died doing what she loved most, pushing herself to limits in the high mountains. Her strength, determination, and passion have left an indelible mark on both the sporting and mountaineering communities.
