In Pakistan, most steel melting units operate while disregarding health, safety and environmental (HSE) norms. These units involve high temperature processes like melting, billet casting and rolling, in addition to a harsh and physically demanding work environment. The use of safety gear and proper environmental protection infrastructure is essential for such industries.
Unfortunately, low and medium-profile units show little concern and continue operations at the cost of human lives, which is an inhumane act. The relevant authorities must conduct regular audits to ensure the strict implementation of HSE practices in every steel melting unit.
