In Pakistan, the unchecked use of plastic bags remains a serious environmental issue, despite repeated government efforts to ban them. From major cities to rural towns, plastic bags continue to choke our drains, pollute rivers and litter streets. They are not biodegradable and pose long-term threats to wildlife and public health. Pakistan produces over 3 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, a significant portion of which consists of single-use plastic bags.
While some provinces have taken steps to restrict their use, enforcement remains weak and alternatives like cloth or jute bags are not widely promoted. Public awareness is also lacking and many continue to use plastic bags out of habit or convenience. Banning plastic bags, promoting sustainable alternatives and launching awareness campaigns to educate people about the dangers of plastic pollution are essential to protect our environment and future generations.
