KP needs anti-drone system after attack on police station
PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa needs an anti-drone system after a number of terror incidents in which quadcopters were used. The latest incident happened in Bannu where Miryan Police Station was attacked with a drone. There was no casualty in the incident.
According to senior officials it was a small drone and it was first incident if its kind. However, the trend is alarming as there were already reports that terrorist groups used these unmanned aerial vehicles in few incidents recently.
Presently, the KP government and police do not have any anti-drone system to detect and hit these unmanned aerial vehicles. An official said the KP Police had suggested purchasing anti-drone system as well as guns to counter any misuse of unmanned aerial vehicles by the terrorists.
The government was informed that Punjab had already purchased the system that was provided to the regions despite the threat level these is not as high as that in KP.
Recently, there were reports that terrorists used drones to carry out attacks on public places in southern districts, including North Waziristan.
Also, a number of drones were shot down in the country after being launched by India last month.Drones can also be used for various other functions by terrorists and criminals.Apart from the anti-drone system, the police in KP, particularly in southern districts, need a more sophisticated system to counter attacks by the terrorists and go after their network.
Recently, special sniper commandos were trained that will make teams for every district to shoot their targets.Besides, more bullet-proof vehicles, thermal imaging guns and scopes have been provided to the force in troubled districts.
