Despite being Pakistan’s economic hub, Karachi continues to grapple with uncollected garbage, overflowing dumpsters, and unhygienic streets. This poses severe risks to public health and the environment. The negligence of civic authorities has allowed heaps of waste to fester in both residential and commercial areas, attracting pests and contributing to the spread of diseases. The problem becomes even more alarming during the summer months when high temperatures accelerate the decomposition of waste, creating unbearable conditions for residents.
While short-term clean-up drives are occasionally launched, a sustainable waste management plan is missing. The residents of Karachi deserve a systematic and transparent waste disposal mechanism, involving efficient collection, proper landfill usage, recycling initiatives and public awareness campaigns. I urge the Sindh government and municipal bodies to treat this matter with the urgency it deserves, collaborate with private firms and ensure Karachi becomes the clean and livable city its residents deserve.
