Judges, experts at CCP meet stress competition law enforcement

KARACHI: The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) convened a high-level session on Monday, engaging prominent judges and legal experts to discuss critical aspects of competition law enforcement, said a statement.

The forum, titled ‘Leadership, Professionalism in Quasi-Judicial Role and Competition Law Jurisprudence’, aimed to foster dialogue and address key challenges within the sector.Justice Jawad Hassan of the Lahore High Court, a leading authority on constitutional and competition law, delivered the keynote address, focusing on the ‘Maintainability of Writ Petitions -- Doctrine of Ripeness’. He referenced his significant judgments that have shaped the interpretation of competition law in Pakistan.

The event featured international perspectives with presentations from Deputy District Judge Ghazan Mahmood of the Judiciary of England and Wales, who shared insights on ‘Evidence in Civil Cases’ based on the UK legal framework. District Judge Sufiyan Rana, also from the UK judiciary, discussed ‘Leadership and Professionalism in Quasi-Judicial Roles’, emphasising ethics and judicial education.

Dr Ahmad Ghouri, associate professor at the University of Sussex, provided an academic viewpoint, addressing the complexities of cross-border regulatory frameworks and their impact on competition law in a globalised market.

Earlier in the session, CCP Chairperson Dr Kabir Ahmed Sidhu underscored the commission’s dedication to promoting a competitive and transparent economic environment. He highlighted the significance of principled decision-making in strengthening the CCP’s quasi-judicial function.Participants lauded the initiative for facilitating crucial discussions and promoting collaboration between the judiciary and regulatory bodies, the statement read.
