Massive sales tax fraud uncovered in iron and steel sector

KARACHI: The Regional Tax Office-1 (RTO-1) has uncovered a substantial sales tax fraud amounting to approximately Rs315 billion in the iron and steel sector.

The fraudulent activities were carried out under the leadership of two individuals, according to a statement released by RTO-1 on Friday. The operation was allegedly conducted with the assistance of two other accomplices, who are the brother and cousin of the two individuals. Additionally, another significant accomplice in the scheme, has also been arrested.

All the accused were presented before the Special Court of Customs, Taxation, and Anti-Smuggling. The Special Judge has ordered the detention of two accomplices in jail custody. Meanwhile, one of the accomplices has been granted a seven-day physical remand and handed over to RTO-1 for further investigation.

The regional office has launched an ongoing investigation to identify other individuals involved and determine the beneficiaries of the fraud.

Chief Commissioner of RTO-1 Dr Faheem Mohammad commended his team for their efforts in tracking down and apprehending those responsible for the crime. He emphasised that RTO-1 remains committed to tackling sales tax fraud and bringing those involved to justice, sending a strong message to deter such illicit activities.
