LAHORE: Quetta Gladiators mentor and cricketing legend Sir Vivian Richards has expressed optimism ahead of the Lahore leg of the competition, believing that the change of venue could be a turning point for his team.
Speaking to the media, the iconic West Indian cricketer acknowledged the challenges faced by the Gladiators, who suffered defeats in their last two matches. “We have lost the last two matches, and Quetta Gladiators haven’t played the way they are capable of. However, it’s a new venue with new conditions, and we know we can do better,” Richards said.
Richards highlighted the inclusion of New Zealand’s Mark Chapman to the Gladiators’ line-up as a positive move, stating, “A player like Mark Chapman has joined our squad. He has done very well for New Zealand and has the ability to play well.”
Despite the setbacks, Richards remains confident in his team’s ability to bounce back. “Sometimes you lose, no matter how good a team you are. We are down, but not out. I am confident that we can perform better going forward,” he asserted.
Richards expressed his affection for Pakistan, calling it his “second home.” He reminisced about his frequent visits to the country, both as part of the West Indies team and in his role as mentor. “I enjoy coming here, and I am happy wherever cricket takes me,” he added.
Addressing questions regarding Saud Shakeel’s captaincy, Richards was supportive of his young skipper, saying, “There is no issue with Saud Shakeel’s captaincy. He is doing well at the moment, and we should decide at the end how he has been as a captain. We should not be discouraged after losing two matches.”
Richards also emphasised the team’s strong morale, urging fans and stakeholders to remain hopeful despite their recent struggles. As Quetta Gladiators prepare for their matches in Lahore, the legendary cricketer’s confidence offers a rallying cry for the team to rise to the occasion and deliver their best performance.
