Breathing toxins

The alarming state of Karachi’s Air Quality Index (AQI), has placed the city as the third most polluted in Pakistan according to current measures. The major contributor to the severe pollution is particulate matter (PM), which results from emissions from vehicles, industrial activities, and the burning of waste. The extremely poor air quality levels in the main cities of Pakistan have led to the nation being ranked as the third most polluted country in 2024. This level of pollution is not only detrimental to the environment but also poses serious health risks to its residents, leading to an increase in respiratory issues and other diseases related to air quality.

To improve Karachi’s AQI and reduce air pollution, immediate and effective actions are needed. The government must enforce strict regulations on vehicle emissions and industrial pollutants while promoting cleaner energy sources. Expanding green spaces, planting more trees and reducing waste burning can help absorb pollutants and improve air quality. Additionally, a shift toward eco-friendly public transport systems, like electric buses or trains, could significantly reduce emissions from traffic. By adopting these measures, Karachi can ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for its residents.
