ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Tuesday accorded Rs3.32 per unit reduction in power tariff for ex-Wapda distribution companies for May 2016 under the monthly fuel price adjustment to pass on the benefits of ‘cheaper cost of fuel for power generation’ to domestic power consumers.
In a public hearing that was presided over by Vice Chairman Himayatullah Khan, the Nepra concluded that the distribution companies had charged Rs6.77 per unit on account of fuel cost to consumers in May but the actual fuel cost was significantly lower.
The authority noted that the actual cost of the electricity generation, for the month of May, was Rs3.49 per unit and decided that Rs3.32 per unit should be returned to the consumers. The average cost of per unit remained at Rs3.45 per unit while the consumers were charged Rs6.77 per unit.
This adjustment/relief will be available to domestic consumers in entire Pakistan, except in Karachi where the K-Electric (now a privatised company) is distributing its own generated electricity to the city and is not covered under this package.
It will also be not available to the lifeline consumers consuming up to 300 units per month, as they are already enjoying subsidised electricity. This compensation will be available to consumers in their electricity bills of July 2016.
