Deadly roads
Road accidents are perhaps one of the most overlooked problems in Pakistan, with around 30,000 people dying in fatal crashes every year. This points to the fact that the transportation system of the country has been left in ruins and also indicates that people refuse to follow the rules of the road. As a result, they pay a heavy price while putting others in danger as well. This week added to the grisly total, when a tragic accident occurred on the IJP Road in Islamabad on Friday (March 28). A dump truck overturned, crushing several vehicles beneath it, resulting in the deaths of at least four people and leaving three others injured.
To date, the authorities have been unsuccessful in controlling or even mitigating such accidents. I urge the traffic and transport authorities to take serious steps to eliminate the cause of such accidents and take those responsible
to task. Also, the authorities concerned should take
action against those who break traffic rules.
