LAHORE: The Punjab government has initiated the proactive steps to address concerns of Chinese companies related to dedicated markets, salons, and other essential facilities within industrial zones so that the Chinese residents can access basic necessities without security concerns.
Around two dozen of the Chinese companies operating in Pakistan have raised these concerns with the Punjab government and in response the govt has assured to address these concerns on priority basis.
These issues were highlighted in a meeting between Punjab Home Secretary Noor ul Amin Mengal, Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) Vice President Zafar Iqbal and Mr Elton, a representative of Chinese companies here on Tuesday. Punjab Home Dept Additional Secretary Ms Uzma Saleem also attended the meeting.
The meeting discussed the security and well-being of Chinese nationals residing and working in Pakistan. The Chinese companies’ officials requested the Punjab govt to make some amendments to the SOPs to ensure safer movement and improved facilities for Chinese professionals in the country’s industrial zones, with concerns regarding the daily movement of Chinese nationals.
Elton, a Chinese businessman in Pakistan, discussed around 24 complaint letters by various Chinese companies. The amended SOPs aimed to enhance security measures in the areas frequently used by Chinese nationals.
The govt will establish dedicated commercial zones within industrial hubs to minimise security risks and to ensure seamless coordination between law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities for improved vigilance.
Mengal reaffirmed Punjab govt’s commitment to the safety and comfort of Chinese nationals, stating that China is Pakistan’s longstanding strategic partner, and it is our utmost priority to provide a secure and hospitable environment for our Chinese friends. These measures will not only strengthen security but also foster a more business-friendly ecosystem in our industrial zones.
Zafar Iqbal welcomed the initiative and expressed confidence that these measures will encourage further Chinese investment and reinforce the trust between the two nations. The Punjab govt remains dedicated to ensuring a robust security framework for foreign investors and professionals, underscoring its commitment to Pakistan’s economic growth and international partnerships.
