Twenty-first century foreign policy

Foreign policy has evolved significantly over the years, shaped by globalisation and shifting international dynamics. In the past, nations primarily focused on military alliances and ideological divisions, such as during the cold war. However, in today’s interconnected world, foreign policy emphasises trade, diplomacy, and cooperation on global challenges like climate change, security, and economic development. Pakistan’s foreign policy has also transformed over time. Initially, Pakistan maintained close ties with Western countries, particularly the United States. Over the years, it strengthened its strategic partnership with China, leading to major initiatives like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Today, Pakistan seeks a balanced approach, fostering relationships with multiple nations while prioritising economic progress and regional stability.

As the world faces emerging challenges, foreign policy must continue to adapt. Nations should prioritise diplomacy, economic collaboration, and peaceful engagement rather than conflict-driven strategies. For Pakistan, a pragmatic and flexible foreign policy will be essential in securing its national interests and enhancing its global influence.
