Learn to say ‘no’

This letter refers to the editorial ‘Political quagmire’ (February 21, 2025). The editorial simplifies the problem when it highlights that Sharif, Zardari, and Imran Khan must set aside their rivalries. It is evident that Sharif and Imran share a similar background as to how they became politicians and what support they received. Zardari's presence, however, seems more circumstantial. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's political rise wasn’t solely home-grown either.

A straightforward solution to governance disparity is for politicians to strengthen their resolve, embrace democratic values within their parties, then in parliament and, if necessary, decline positions if they feel undue pressure. Some strong will is required of politicians to refuse opportunities if they feel their rivals were treated unfairly. Leave the parliament building empty if it is required. Until then, there is no hope and self-interest and greed will drive democracy away from Pakistan's governance setup and we will remain trapped in the same cycle.
